Lithium is one of the lightest elements with atomic number of 3. Only Hydrogen and Helium are lighter.
Lithium has been an important additive to alloys and glass for a long time but with its latest use is in Lithium Ion batteries, global production has doubled in last 4 years. Current projections show demand growing over 30 times in next 10 years.
Currently Australia, Chile and China produce over 80% of world lithium supply and China alone producing over 70% of world lithium-ion battery cells.
India currently has limited known Lithium reserves, but work has started to identify and tap reserves of “the new oil”.
