Most renewable power sources are unpredictable. For us to become a society using more renewables and less “carbon-based energy storage”, one of the key challenge is to grow other forms of energy storage - at scale and considering lifetime costs.
Four major types of energy storage technologies are Pumped Hydro, Thermal, mechanical and batteries. First three have high capital costs & usually need large centralized infrastructure. Electric energy stored in batteries on is easier to manage, measure, distribute and consume.
For a geographically diverse country as India, a grid with hyper distributed electrical energy storage technology can manage unpredictable production of renewables and a varying consumption shifts across the country.
